Chicagoans have a trick for that: Jeppson’s Malört (better known as Chicago’s very own revenge shot).

Jeppson’s Malört is getting some recent hype with the announcement of its very own documentary set to come out this summer.



Even after a long workweek, most of us aren’t craving Jeppson’s Malört. The extremely bitter wormwood Swedish schnapps style of liquor isn’t for everyone, and the brand doesn’t deny it. According to its Facebook page, “Most first-time drinkers of Jeppson’s Malört reject our liquor. Its strong, sharp taste is not for everyone. Our liquor is rugged and unrelenting (even brutal) to the palate.” A stellar example of impeccably honest marketing, that is.

If you’ve never had the joys of experiencing a shot of Malört, this video pretty much sums it up for you.

For Chicagoans, this beskbrännvin serves as a rite of passage; for non-Chicagoans, it’s pretty much the cruelest offering of their lives. Inevitably, “Malört face” follows every shot of Malört (unless you’re completely dauntless). Redeye took a trip to last year’s SXSW, equipped with Chicago’s bitterest and a camera to capture Austin’s unsuspecting reactions to this unique Chicago liquor.
